How to Construct a High Voltage Jacob's Ladder

I assume all of you have at one point seen the old Frankenstein movies where the lab is filled with an assortment of electronic gadgets, all of them sparking and hissing furiously...Well, if you remember, one of these consisted of a V-shaped piece of wire, where a spark would form at the base of the V and slowly crawl up the wires, expanding until it reached the top..where it would bow out and disappear while a new spark formed back at the base...
Such a device is known as a Jacob's Ladder (from the Bible, I think, where this
dude named Jacob has a vision of Angels climbing some celestial, firey ladder)
and was designed especially for special effects use in Frankenstein movies...

The First Thanksgiving Proclamation

On June 20, 1676, the governing council of Charlestown,
Massachusetts, held a meeting to determine how best to express
thanks for the good fortune that had seen their community
securely established. By unamimous vote they instructed
Edward Rawson, the clerk, to proclaim June 29 as a day of
thanksgiving, our first. That proclamation is reproduced here
in the same language and spelling as the original.

Scientific secrets

One day, while raiding my parents attic, I came across some old books we had enjoyed as children.  "YOUNG'S DEMONSTRATIVE TRANSLATION OF CIENTIFIC SECRETS" being one of them.  Everyone liked to look through the old book to see the way things were done over one hundred and twenty five
years ago.
The problem, of course, was that the combination of age and frequent handling were having a disastrous effect on the book's physical condition.
The solution was to copy the book so we could enjoy what it contained without further damage to the original.
During the summer of 1987 my nephew (Bob Gravonic) and I copied it on to my computer.  It's been done as faithfully as possible.  Obscure items have been copied exactly as printed and many of the  spellings which you may attribute to copy mistakes are as they were originally printed.
While every effort has been made to ensure that what you now have is an exact copy of the original text, we make no guarantees to this end.  We definitely do not encourage the use of the remedies or medicines listed in he text for various ailments and diseases.
